Vacation 2016, Rainy 4th of July

Leaving Cooperstown, we headed southwest into Pennsylvania - our seventh state of our trip.  Our goal for the day was to get to Hershey's Chocolate World.  Despite the drizzle and a bit of a lunch snafu, we succeeded.
We took the free "tour," which is really a ride with characters showing you how chocolate is made with a free mini-Hershey bar at the end.  We also toured around the shop, bought some treats, and found some of the world's largest candies.
Ava knows all about the life and times of Milton Hershey from the book "Who Was Milton Hershey?" so we took the trolley which took us around town to sites including Hershey's home, the original factory, and the school Hershey set up for orphans.
The afternoon's light drizzle had turned to rain, but that didn't deter us from heading to Harrisburg's City Island to try to catch the Harrisburg Senators game and the post-game fireworks.
As the weather worsened we knew there was no way we were going to get a game in, so Ava experienced her very first rain out.  With our club level seats we did get to eat dinner inside in the stadium club with all you can eat sausages, burgers, BBQ chicken and pork, salad, potato salad, cole slaw, watermelon, apple and cherry pie.
Ava also spent time goofing around in the team store before we headed back to our hotel.
As our planned activity was cancelled, we went to the pool where Ava swam in between the indoor and outdoor sections.
Afterward, we watched fireworks on TV and saw a few through the rain and clouds off in the distance from our hotel room.  Tomorrow Ava gets to be the boss as we head to Hersheypark for a day of amusement rides, waterslides, and chocolate.

How fun! I remember Hersheypark/world what's it called? - that amusement park - from 30+ years ago on a trip with my family and thought it was the best place ever! Sophie is at Camp Tawonga near Yosemite right now and they always stop in Oakdale on the buses on the way to camp. That is the town where they made Hershey's in California! The plant closed in 2007, but I remember it was a connection between my CA and NY worlds. ; )

Have a great time, and I love vacationing vicariously via your family!
